- The Spellcasting Secret Witches Use: How to Layer Spells for Max Speed and Results
A SPELLCASTING SECRET FROM BEHIND THE ALTAR Why witches layer their most important workings. There is a little secret hiding in plain sight in witchcraft, and once you understand it, you may never look at spellwork quite the same way again. When witches create important workings for themselves, we do not necessarily search for one enormous, all-purpose spell and expect it to carry every part of the situation on its back. Very often, we layer magick. We look at the different pieces of the desired outcome, then use complementary workings so each spell has a specific job. If you have ever wondered why a witch might perform one spell and then add another several days later, or why I create bundles containing spells that sound related but are deliberately not identical, I'm going to let you behind the altar and show you why. Layering is not about piling on as many spells as humanly possible, nor is it about performing the same spell ten times because apparently the universe has developed a hearing problem. It is about looking at a goal the way a spellcaster looks at it and asking, “What different things could help this outcome come together?” That deceptively simple question can completely change how a working is constructed. Take money magick. If someone tells me they need financial improvement, I could certainly perform a prosperity spell. But when I am constructing a larger working, I want to know more. Is money delayed? Is income inconsistent? Does their business need customers? Are opportunities failing to appear? Is money arriving but disappearing just as quickly? Is something already owed to them? Do they need visibility, career movement, financial stability or an entirely new income channel? All of those roads may lead toward greater prosperity, but magically speaking, they are not the same road. That is where layering gets interesting. TEN JOBS. ONE DESTINATION. WHY WITCHES LAYER SPELLWORK Instead of asking one spell to handle an entire complicated situation, I might use one working for financial movement, another for opportunity, another for visibility, another for breaking stagnation and another for protecting or stabilizing what comes in. Each spell has its own assignment, but all of those assignments can support the same larger desired reality. Witches already use a similar principle inside individual spells. A working may contain a particular candle color, herbs, oils, stones, petitions, incense and symbolic objects. A key can represent access. A coin can represent material prosperity. A rose can speak of love or passion. A mirror can represent identity, glamour or self-perception. A petition gives the intention language. Each component contributes another piece of symbolic vocabulary until the working begins speaking in sentences instead of one lonely word. The point is not to empty the entire apothecary onto the altar until the universe becomes concerned about our organizational skills. The point is coherence. Every part has a job. Layered spellwork simply takes that familiar principle and makes it larger. Instead of layering only ingredients inside one spell, we can layer different spells around one desired outcome. And that is the real secret behind the bundles I create. WHY MY BUNDLES CONTAIN DIFFERENT SPELLS When you see ten spells inside one of my collections, I have not simply found ten vaguely similar spells and put a pretty ribbon around them. There is an architecture behind the collection. Each working is selected because it addresses a different piece of the same general goal, and the spells are designed to complement one another rather than unnecessarily duplicate one another. Look at The Love Must Move Forward Collection. Someone experiencing relationship limbo may not simply need “a love spell.” The larger situation could involve emotional distance, communication, buried feelings, attraction, uncertainty, intimacy, willingness to invest in the relationship and movement into a new phase. That is why the collection contains separate workings such as Break the Emotional Stalemate, Open the Heart Again, Speak What the Heart Has Hidden, Cross the Emotional Distance, Passion Beneath the Surface and Our Next Chapter Begins. They all belong to the same relationship story, but each has its own assignment. The same principle applies to The Financial Blockage Breaker Collection. Someone seeking greater prosperity might have stalled income, delayed payments, inconsistent cash flow, limited income channels or an obstacle they cannot even identify yet. Release the Delayed Payment therefore does not have the same job as Open the Income Channel. Break the Feast-or-Famine Cycle addresses something different from Prosperity Breakthrough. Together, however, they can be directed toward the same larger financial goal. And here is where personalization matters: the bundle provides the magical architecture, but your questionnaire tells me how that architecture should be built around you. Your circumstances, desired outcome, relationships, priorities and the changes you actually want to see help determine how I personalize those individual workings. Two people can purchase the same collection because they share the same broad goal while having completely different stories underneath it. YOU CAN BUILD YOUR OWN LAYERS, TOO This is the other reason I wanted to explain this particular piece of spellcraft. You absolutely do not have to purchase a ten-spell collection to use layered spellwork. Maybe you already purchased eclipse work from me on August 12, but an important situation has appeared and you realize what you need now is Courage Under Pressure. That can become another layer. Maybe you're growing a business and Send the Signal fits beautifully, but finances have also stalled, so you add Money Momentum. Perhaps a relationship needs movement, but part of the situation involves finding the confidence to express what you actually want. Relationship Turning Point and Unapologetic suddenly make a very interesting pair. The bundles are curated layers. The individual spells allow you to build your own. And more is not automatically better. You do not need twenty-seven spells, fourteen candles and enough rosemary to cause an emergency meeting at Whole Foods. The useful question is much simpler: What job would this spell add that the others are not already doing? If you can answer that clearly, you may have found your next layer. THE CURRENT MAGICAL WINDOW Growth. Movement. Transformation. BETWEEN TWO ECLIPSES There could hardly be a more interesting moment to talk about layered magick because we are currently standing in the strange little hallway between two eclipses. The August 12 total solar eclipse came first, and the August 28 partial lunar eclipse completes this eclipse pair. Astronomically, eclipses are specific alignments among the Sun, Moon and Earth. Symbolically, human beings have spent thousands of years being spectacularly incapable of behaving casually when the two most dependable lights in the sky suddenly do something weird. Across cultures, eclipses accumulated stories involving celestial creatures swallowing the Sun or Moon, omens, rulers, ritual responses and major disruptions to the expected order of the heavens. Apparently looking upward and saying, “Huh. Neat,” was simply never our species' style. For magical and astrological practitioners today, eclipse periods are often associated with turning points, revelations, endings, beginnings and accelerated change. But the part I find particularly interesting right now is that we are between the dramatic moments. The solar eclipse has already happened. The lunar eclipse has not happened yet. We are in the middle of the story, and the middle is where intentions either remain lovely ideas or begin acquiring movement, resistance, opportunities, complications and actual form. You plant the seed, and then you have to grow the damn plant. You launch the business, and then somebody has to find it. You meet the person, and then a relationship has to develop. You state the intention, and then circumstances begin changing through all the wonderfully ordinary little doors by which lives actually change: messages, introductions, ideas, conversations, opportunities, decisions, money, timing and people suddenly appearing in exactly the right place. This is why I find the space between intention and fulfillment every bit as fascinating as either endpoint. THE FIRST QUARTER QUESTION: WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? The First Quarter Moon adds another useful symbolic layer. The beginning has already happened. Now the waxing cycle is building toward fullness, which makes this a natural time for magical themes involving growth, strengthening, development, movement and pushing through resistance. Planting is easy compared with growing. Anyone can decide they want tomatoes. Then July arrives and apparently you are engaged in an armed conflict with aphids. Manifestation has aphids too: delay, fear, bad timing, old patterns, uncertainty, other people, missing information, stalled circumstances and doors that have not opened yet. That changes the magical question from “What do I want to begin?” into something much more useful: “What needs to happen next?” That question became one of the foundations for this week's spellwork. THEN ANTARES WALKS INTO THE STORY Thursday adds another fascinating piece through Antares, the brilliant reddish star marking the heart of Scorpius. Its name comes from an ancient comparison with Mars because of its distinctive red appearance, and in astrological tradition Antares became counted among the four Royal Stars, accumulating associations with intensity, courage, ambition, power and formidable circumstances. That gives us something different from simple manifestation or attraction. Movement is useful. Opportunity is useful. Growth is useful. But sometimes the next thing required is courage. The opportunity appears, but you still have to answer. The conversation becomes possible, but somebody has to speak. The interview arrives, but you have to walk into the room. The boundary becomes obvious, but you still have to hold it. Sometimes the road opens. Sometimes the next magical layer is becoming brave enough to walk through it. TEN INDIVIDUAL WORKINGS For one clear intention. BUILD YOUR OWN SPELLWORK This week's ten individual workings are $35 each, and each can stand completely on its own. But now that you know the layering secret, you can also look at them as building blocks and combine two or three that address genuinely different pieces of the same situation. Make It Move breaks stagnation and encourages forward momentum. Money Momentum focuses that movement specifically on finances and opportunity. Relationship Turning Point works with relationships that need to progress. Eclipse Intention Activation returns energy and attention to intentions or spellwork begun around the August 12 eclipse. Ripen My Blessing focuses on something already developing that needs fruition. Unapologetic centers confidence, authenticity and visibility. Courage Under Pressure supports strength and composure when something important is at stake. Send the Signal focuses on customers, audience, networking and being noticed. Hidden Money Revealed works with overlooked financial resources and possibilities. The Turning Point focuses more broadly on changing the trajectory of something that needs meaningful movement. Choose one because it precisely matches the piece you want to work on. Choose two or three because their different assignments fit together. Or simply use one now and add another layer later if the situation develops in a new direction. OR BUILD THE WHOLE WORLD 10 spells. 10 layers. 1 desired reality. OR LET ME BUILD THE LAYERS FOR YOU The eight complete collections take this philosophy much further. Each contains ten separate personalized workings designed from the beginning to complement one another around a shared goal. Ten individual $35 workings would normally total $350, while each complete ten-spell collection is $150. That is already a $200 savings before today's subscriber offer. But now you understand why I do not think of these simply as discount bundles. They are constructed magical systems. The collection provides the architecture. Your questionnaire gives me your story, priorities and desired outcome so I can personalize that architecture around you. And because I apparently woke up this week and chose financial irresponsibility on behalf of my own store, there is one more thing. 45% OFF THIS SPELLWORK Subscriber Exclusive CODE: LAYER45 A LITTLE SOMETHING FOR ACTUALLY READING YOUR EMAIL If you've made it this far, first of all, I like you. You are my kind of person. Second, I wanted the people who actually open and read these newsletters to get something they would not necessarily discover simply by wandering onto the website. Use code LAYER45 for 45% off this spellwork during the current magical window. You can use it toward one individual working if one particular spell is calling your name, or toward one of the larger collections if you want the complete layered system. And yes, I hid the coupon halfway through the article on purpose. Consider it a tiny reward for being one of the people who actually reads instead of opening an email, scrolling frantically for the giant red percentage sign and fleeing. I see you. I appreciate you. Here is your contraband discount. 😂 CODE: LAYER45 THE EIGHT COMPLETE COLLECTIONS THE MONEY MUST MOVE COLLECTION Release. Restore. Break Through. Prosperity. Cash Flow. Financial Breakthrough. Sometimes prosperity does not need one road. It needs several roads moving at once. A sale comes in. A payment clears. A profitable idea appears. A new customer finds you. An opportunity opens. One financial development creates enough movement for another to follow. The Money Must Move Collection layers ten different workings around prosperity, cash flow and financial expansion. The collection includes Cash Flow Breakthrough, Prosperity Road Opener, Money Finds Me, Financial Block Dissolver and additional workings designed around receiving, opportunity and financial momentum. Rather than asking one prosperity spell to perform every possible job, we're surrounding the larger financial goal from several directions. The intention is beautifully uncomplicated: open what can open, reveal what can be revealed, grow what can grow and move the damn money. THE RELATIONSHIP TURNING POINT COLLECTION Love. Connection. Romantic Momentum. Love may be one of the best examples of why layered spellwork makes sense. A relationship can have attraction without communication, communication without emotional intimacy, intimacy without commitment or love without enough movement to get two people into the same chapter. The Relationship Turning Point Collection approaches the larger love story through ten complementary workings, including Heart-to-Heart Communication, Passion Rekindling, Relationship Timeline Reset, Choose Us Again, Emotional Closeness Activation, Romantic Momentum, Commitment Pathway Opening, Sweet Reunion Current, Love Story Rewrite and Next Chapter Together. Each working has a different assignment, but all ten are directed toward connection, development and the relationship reality described in your questionnaire. Sometimes the wish isn't simply, “Bring me love.” Sometimes it is: “This is where I want the love story to change.” NO MORE CLOSED DOORS BREAKTHROUGH COLLECTION Road Opening. Obstacle Removal. Breakthrough. Then there are those situations where you don't particularly care which door opens anymore. You would simply appreciate confirmation that the building does, in fact, contain doors. No More Closed Doors Breakthrough Collection surrounds a stuck situation with ten different pathways toward movement: Road Opener, Stuck Energy Breaker, Obstacles Fall Away, The Answer Changes, Permission Granted, Impossible Door Opening, Sudden Breakthrough, Path of Least Resistance, Green Light Activation and Everything Starts Moving. This can be especially interesting for applications, approvals, projects, decisions, career situations, housing, negotiations, opportunities or circumstances that have remained stuck long enough to qualify for adverse possession. Instead of demanding that progress arrive through one specific route, we give the desired outcome multiple possible doors. THE QUANTUM TIMELINE JUMP COLLECTION Reality Shift. Future Self. New Timeline. This is where layered magick gets gloriously ambitious. Instead of focusing on one isolated development, The Quantum Timeline Jump Collection works with the larger reality you want to enter. Its ten layers are Desired Reality Alignment, Future Self Activation, Quantum Leap, Timeline Selection, Reality Reorganization, Synchronicity Cascade, Butterfly Effect, Destiny Crossroads, Parallel Path Activation and Welcome to the New Timeline. The idea is to establish the desired future as the destination while giving change more than one route to reach it. One small event might trigger a butterfly effect. One synchronicity could create an introduction. One crossroads could place you somewhere unexpected. An alternate path may accomplish the same goal through circumstances you never would have predicted. This is less about enchanting one domino and more about asking: What if we enchanted the direction the dominoes are falling? SOVEREIGN POWER & MAGNETIC IDENTITY COLLECTION Confidence. Charisma. Self-Concept. Not every manifestation begins with changing the outside world. Sometimes changing who you are inside the story changes what becomes possible around you. Sovereign Power & Magnetic Identity Collection contains ten workings designed around identity, confidence, dignity, visibility and personal power: Main Character Energy, Magnetic Presence, Divine Confidence, Seen, Heard & Remembered, Personal Power Reclamation, Irresistible Charisma, Dignity Restoration, Radical Self-Worth, Crown Yourself and Become Her. This is the collection for the version of you who no longer feels hypothetical. How does that person carry herself? What does she expect from love, money and work? What does she tolerate? What does she create? What happens when confidence, visibility, dignity, charisma and self-worth are not separate goals but different expressions of the same identity? There is powerful magick in realizing you do not require a committee vote to become yourself. THE GOLDEN HARVEST MANIFESTATION COLLECTION Fruition. Abundance. Reward. This one is for everyone who is tired of planting. You planted. You watered. You weeded. You waited. You questioned your life choices. At some point, we would like a tomato. The Golden Harvest Manifestation Collection layers ten workings around maturation, abundance and receiving: Blessing Multiplier, Wish Fruition, Harvest What I Planted, Sweeten the Outcome, Manifestation Ripening, Abundance Overflow, Reward Arrives, Golden Timing, More Than I Asked For and The Harvest Is Mine. This is not simply attraction magick. It is especially suited to something that already has roots in your story: work already performed, an intention already planted, a relationship already developing, a project already underway or a manifestation that seems to be ripening toward something tangible. The magical question changes from “How do I begin?” to “How beautifully could this bear fruit?” THE ROYAL STAR VICTORY COLLECTION Courage. Favor. Protection. Victory. Sometimes you know exactly where the road leads. You just don't particularly want to walk down it. The interview. The hearing. The negotiation. The medical situation. The competition. The important conversation. The moment when somebody expects you to become intimidated, lose your composure or forget everything intelligent you have ever known approximately three seconds after entering the room. Inspired by the symbolism of Antares, The Royal Star Victory Collection layers Victory Before Me, Courage of the Scorpion, Favor in Important Matters, Powerful First Impression, Right Words Right Moment, Protected Through the Test, Command the Room, Strength Under Pressure, Successful Outcome and Walk Away Victorious. I especially love the architecture of this one because it doesn't ask one courage spell to do everything. Courage has one job. Communication has another. Favor, protection, presence, composure and the desired outcome each receive their own attention. Together, they surround the entire important moment, from walking in to walking back out again. VISIBILITY, SUCCESS & OPPORTUNITY COLLECTION Recognition. Audience. Opportunity. You do not need everybody to notice you. You need the right people to notice you. The customer. The reader. The employer. The collaborator. The client. The person who recommends you. The person who sees your work and immediately thinks, “I know exactly who needs this.” Visibility, Success & Opportunity Collection layers ten workings around discovery and connection: Right Eyes Find Me, Audience Magnet, Customer Attraction, Viral Ripple, Word-of-Mouth Expansion, Recognition & Reputation, Powerful Connections, Opportunity Signal, Right Place Right Time and Everybody's Talking. One customer finds you and tells another person. One reader shares your work. One introduction leads to a collaboration. One employer mentions your name. One opportunity puts you in front of another opportunity. That is why visibility is so interesting as layered magick: useful visibility doesn't merely create attention. It creates connections, and connections create consequences. BUILD THE WORLD AROUND THE WISH One spell can hold one intention beautifully. Sometimes one focused working is exactly what you need, and there is no prize for turning a simple intention into a supernatural group project. But sometimes the future you want contains several moving pieces. A door opens. A message arrives. Money moves. Someone responds. Something ripens. Your work gets noticed. You finally speak. An opportunity appears. You hold your ground. One development makes another possible. That is when I start thinking in layers. Not because ten spells are simply louder than one, but because sometimes the desired reality has ten different doors leading into it. The individual spells allow you to choose the particular door you want to work with. The complete collections allow us to work with an entire network of doors. Your questionnaire gives me the information I need to personalize those workings around the actual circumstances, people, priorities and desired outcome sitting on the other side. So before you choose, ask yourself the spellcaster's question I gave you at the beginning: What different things could help this outcome come together? You may discover that you need one very specific working. You may discover that two seemingly different spells make perfect sense together. Or you may look at one of these complete collections and realize somebody has already mapped the magical ecosystem you were trying to describe. Either way, now you know what we've been doing behind the altar all along. Welcome backstage. Try not to knock over the rosemary. With love and magick, Audra P.S. FOR THE PEOPLE WHO READ ALL THE WAY DOWN HERE... You already found your reward earlier, but just in case you became distracted somewhere between the quantum timelines, emotional traffic and my desperate desire to make sure everyone gets a chance at this in between eclipses portal: LAYER45 gives you 45% off this spellwork during the current magical window. Because apparently today we are layering spells and discounts. I have no regrets.
- Who Is Yemaya? Meet the Sacred Mother of Waters, Protection, and Renewal
By Audra English There is something about standing beside a great body of water that changes us. Perhaps it is the sound of the waves repeating themselves against the shore. Perhaps it is the horizon reminding us that the world is much larger than whatever has been weighing upon our hearts. Or perhaps water awakens something ancient within us—the memory that every form of life depends upon it, that our bodies are made from it, and that before we ever took our first breath, we were carried safely within it. That is the spiritual language I think of when I think of Yemaya. She is nurturing, but she is not weak. She is loving, but she is not powerless. She is the Mother whose waters sustain life, cleanse sorrow, protect what is precious, and remind us that even the deepest emotions are capable of movement. Yemaya is widely honored as a maternal Orisha connected with water, motherhood, fertility, protection, healing, family, and abundance. However, her story is much deeper than the simplified description of “ocean goddess” that is often repeated throughout modern spiritual spaces. To understand Yemaya respectfully, we must begin with her Yorùbá origins, and then follow her waters across the Atlantic, where her name, imagery, and devotional traditions continued to evolve. How Do You Pronounce Yemaya? The pronunciation depends partly upon which form of her name and which spiritual or linguistic tradition you are using. Yemaya is commonly pronounced: yeh-mah-YAH You may also hear it pronounced: yeh-MY-ah The Spanish-influenced pronunciation yeh-mah-YAH is especially common in Cuban and other Lucumí or Afro-Caribbean contexts. Her traditional Yorùbá name is usually written Yemọja or Yemoja and is approximately pronounced: yeh-MOH-jah The “j” is pronounced like the “j” in jungle. Yorùbá is a tonal language, so an English sound-out guide can only approximate the full traditional pronunciation. The diacritics in Yemọja carry important information about both vowel sounds and tone, which is one reason the name may sound different when spoken by a native Yorùbá speaker. (Wiktionary) You may encounter several variations of her name, including: Yemọja Yemoja Yemaya Yemayá Yemanjá Iemanjá Yemonja These are not simply random misspellings. They reflect different languages, regions, and diasporic traditions through which devotion to her has traveled. Throughout this article, I will primarily use Yemaya, because it is the name most familiar to many of my readers, while also using Yemọja when discussing her traditional Yorùbá origins. Who Is Yemaya? Yemọja is an Orisha within the traditional religion of the Yorùbá people of West Africa. An Orisha is not merely a fictional mythological character or a decorative goddess archetype. Orishas are sacred spiritual powers honored within living religious traditions. Depending upon the tradition and translation being used, they may be described as divinities, sacred forces, spirits, or manifestations through which divine power operates. (World History Encyclopedia) Yemọja is especially associated with: Water Motherhood Pregnancy and fertility Women and children Protection Nurturing Emotional depth Healing Family Life, creation, and continuity She is often understood as a profoundly maternal presence, a mother whose love can comfort, shelter, nourish, and fiercely defend. Yet calling her maternal should never be confused with making her passive. Water can soothe a fever, feed a field, or carry a child safely within the womb. It can also break stone, swallow cities, and reshape an entire coastline. Yemaya contains both truths. She is the tenderness of the water that holds you and the force of the wave that refuses to let what she loves be destroyed. What Does the Name Yemọja Mean? Her name is often explained as a contraction of the Yorùbá words connected with mother, child, and fish. It is commonly translated as: “Mother whose children are the fish” or “Mother of fish children.” This phrase expresses the vastness of her motherhood. Her children are imagined as being as numerous as the fish within the waters, beyond easy counting and spread throughout the living world. Academic discussions of Yemọja also connect this name with her fertility, maternal authority, and relationship with the Ogun River in Nigeria. (Journals) There is something profoundly beautiful about that image. A mother with children too numerous to count. A maternal presence vast enough to hold many lives, many stories, and many generations within her care. Was Yemọja Originally an Ocean Orisha? This is one of the most important distinctions to understand. In traditional Yorùbá religion in West Africa, Yemọja is primarily connected with fresh water and rivers, particularly the Ogun River in Nigeria. She is not simply the Yorùbá “goddess of the sea.” In traditional Yorùbá cosmology, the great depths of the ocean are more directly associated with Olókun. As Yorùbá people and their religious traditions were carried across the Atlantic through the violence of the transatlantic slave trade, Yemọja’s identity continued to develop within new lands and new spiritual communities. In Cuba, Brazil, and other parts of the Americas, her waters expanded symbolically from the river to the sea. She became widely known as Yemaya, Yemanjá, or Iemanjá, the great mother associated with the ocean and its immense life-giving power. (Wikipedia) This does not mean that one understanding is “real” and the other is false. It means that religious traditions live, travel, adapt, and preserve themselves under changing historical conditions. The river mother crossed the ocean with her people. Across the diaspora, she became Mother of the Sea. Yemaya Across the African Diaspora Yemaya is honored in several African diasporic religions and spiritual traditions, although her stories, feast days, colors, offerings, relationships, and ritual customs may differ between them. These traditions include forms of: Yorùbá traditional religion and Ifá practice Lucumí and Santería in Cuba Candomblé in Brazil Umbanda in Brazil Related Orisha traditions throughout the Caribbean and the Americas In Brazil, she is commonly called Iemanjá and is one of the most publicly recognized Orixás. Large celebrations are held in her honor, with devotees carrying flowers and gifts toward the sea. Her image has become deeply woven into Brazilian art, religion, music, public celebration, and cultural memory. (The Museum of Modern Art) In different diasporic traditions, Yemaya may also be associated through religious syncretism with particular forms of the Virgin Mary. These associations developed partly because enslaved Africans were often forced to conceal or reinterpret their traditional religious practices beneath Catholic imagery. That history matters. What may look from the outside like a simple blending of symbols was also an extraordinary act of spiritual survival. Is Yemaya the Mother of All Orishas? Yemaya is frequently described as the mother of the Orishas, the mother of many Orishas, or the mother of living things. The precise stories and family relationships vary between regions, lineages, and religious traditions. There is no single universal mythology followed identically by every devotee. That variation is normal within oral and living religious traditions. The deeper truth carried through these stories is her extraordinary maternal scope. She represents the power that brings forth life, sustains it, protects it, and continues loving it through every changing season. This is not motherhood reduced to sweetness. It is motherhood as creation. Motherhood as guardianship. Motherhood as emotional intelligence. Motherhood as the sacred responsibility to nourish life without surrendering the power necessary to protect it. What Is Yemaya the Orisha Of? Yemaya is most often approached for spiritual matters involving the waters of life—both literal and symbolic. Motherhood and Children She is closely connected with maternal protection, pregnancy, birth, caregiving, and the well-being of children. Many people are drawn to Yemaya when praying for: Protection over a child Strength during motherhood Fertility or pregnancy Healing within a mother-child relationship Wisdom for parenting Emotional safety within a family Blessings for future generations Her maternal energy may also speak to adoptive mothers, grandmothers, guardians, foster parents, caregivers, and those who provide genuine mothering beyond biological relationships. Fertility and Creation Fertility is not limited to pregnancy. It is also the ability to bring something into being. A book. A business. A home. A work of art. A new identity. A healthier family pattern. A completely different future. Yemaya’s waters symbolize the protected space in which new life develops before it becomes visible. She reminds us that creation often requires patience, nourishment, privacy, faith, and time. Emotional Healing Water is one of humanity’s oldest symbols of emotional cleansing and renewal. Yemaya is therefore often approached for matters involving: Emotional exhaustion Grief Heartbreak Inner peace Emotional security Self-compassion Release Renewal The courage to begin again Her energy does not tell us to deny what we feel. It teaches us to allow emotion to move. A feeling that moves can change. A feeling we are forced to imprison often becomes an ocean trapped inside the body. Home and Family Because Yemaya is so deeply connected with motherhood, protection, and emotional security, many people also associate her with the blessing of the home. Her symbolism is particularly meaningful for spiritual work involving: Household peace Family harmony Protection of loved ones Emotional safety New-home blessings Healing family patterns Stronger boundaries A peaceful place to rest and recover A home blessed beneath Yemaya’s waters is not a home where conflict is simply hidden. It is a home where love and dignity are protected strongly enough for honesty, rest, and real emotional security to exist. Protection The maternal waters are not defenseless waters. Yemaya is frequently understood as fiercely protective of those within her care. Her protection may be sought for: Mothers Children Families Pregnant women Travelers Homes Emotional boundaries People moving through vulnerable transitions She teaches a form of protection that is both tender and formidable. A safe harbor is peaceful precisely because something powerful stands between it and the storm. Abundance and Provision The waters sustain entire worlds. They carry food, movement, fertility, trade, nourishment, and life itself. For this reason, Yemaya may also be associated with abundance, but hers is not merely the glittering fantasy of receiving money overnight. Her abundance is provision. Food on the table. A protected home. Steady resources. A business capable of supporting a family. Enough emotional and material security for life to continue growing. It is abundance that nourishes rather than abundance that merely impresses. What Are Yemaya’s Symbols? The symbols associated with Yemaya vary across traditions, but common modern and diasporic imagery includes: Rivers The ocean Waves Seashells Cowrie shells Fish Pearls Boats Moonlight upon water Blue and white fabrics Silver Fans Mirrors Maternal imagery Mermaids in some regions and artistic traditions Cowrie shells have long held associations with water, wealth, divination, femininity, and sacred exchange in many African and diasporic contexts. Blue and white commonly evoke the movement of water, sea foam, purity, protection, and the shimmering boundary between sky and ocean. Pearls beautifully symbolize the hidden treasure created within the depths. However, these correspondences should not be treated as though every community honors Yemaya in exactly the same way. Sacred colors, numbers, ritual tools, foods, songs, and offerings can be specific to particular traditions and initiatory lineages. Is Yemaya Connected With the Moon or Cancer? Many modern spiritual practitioners feel a natural symbolic connection between Yemaya, the Moon, and the zodiac sign Cancer. That connection makes intuitive sense. Cancer is associated in modern astrology with: The Moon Water Motherhood Home Family Emotional security Protection Memory Ancestry Nurturing New life These themes harmonize beautifully with many of the qualities associated with Yemaya. However, it is important to make the distinction clearly: Yemaya is not traditionally a “Cancer goddess” from Yorùbá religion. Connecting her with Cancer season or a Cancer New Moon is a modern spiritual correspondence. It can be meaningful when presented respectfully, but it should not be mistaken for an ancient or universal Yorùbá teaching. In my own practice, I find that the Cancer New Moon provides a beautiful seasonal threshold through which to reflect upon Yemaya’s themes of emotional renewal, family protection, home blessing, fertility, creation, and sacred new beginnings. I do not believe respect requires us to stop finding new meaning. I believe it requires us to be honest about where tradition ends and our personal symbolic interpretation begins. What Can Yemaya Teach Us? The most powerful sacred figures do more than grant requests. They change the way we understand life. Yemaya teaches that tenderness and power were never opposites. She teaches that emotions are not weaknesses to be conquered but waters that must be understood. She teaches that motherhood is not merely biological. It is the sacred labor of protecting, feeding, guiding, and helping life become what it was meant to become. She teaches that abundance should sustain something. She teaches that boundaries can be loving. She teaches that grief moves in tides. She teaches that beginning again does not require pretending the past never happened. The ocean never returns the shoreline to exactly what it was before. It reshapes it. Softly on some days. Violently on others. But always through movement. How Can Someone Honor Yemaya Respectfully? Because Yemaya belongs to living religious traditions, approaching her should begin with humility. That does not mean you must be afraid to learn about her. It means you should resist reducing her to an aesthetic, a personality quiz result, or a convenient collection of spiritual correspondences detached from the people and traditions who have preserved devotion to her. Respectful beginning points may include: Learning about her Yorùbá origins Recognizing differences between Yorùbá and diasporic traditions Speaking her name with care Offering sincere prayer or gratitude Keeping a clean bowl or glass of fresh water as a symbol of reflection Caring for mothers, children, families, or vulnerable people Protecting natural waters Supporting Black and African diasporic scholars, artists, and practitioners Avoiding claims of initiation, authority, or traditional priesthood you do not possess Seeking guidance from initiated practitioners for lineage-specific ceremonies Some traditional rituals, songs, divination methods, sacred objects, and offerings belong within trained or initiated religious practice. Not everything sacred must be copied in order to be appreciated. Sometimes respect looks like listening. Sometimes devotion looks like gratitude. Sometimes the most meaningful offering is becoming more protective of life. A Simple Reflection With Water For a quiet personal reflection, place a clean glass or bowl of fresh water before you. Sit peacefully for several minutes. Think about what water makes possible. Think about everything in your life that has been sustained by care you may not always have noticed. Then speak from your heart. You might say: Yemaya, sacred Mother of Waters, I honor the life-giving power you represent. Thank you for the waters that sustain life, for the love that protects what is still growing, and for the wisdom that teaches us when to hold on and when to release. May I walk with greater compassion, stronger boundaries, and deeper gratitude. May the life entrusted to my care be protected and nourished. This is not intended to imitate a lineage-specific ceremony. It is simply a moment of acknowledgment, gratitude, and reflection. The Sacred Mother of Waters Yemaya cannot be contained within one title. She is river and ocean. Mother and protector. Comfort and power. Memory and renewal. She is honored differently across countries, languages, communities, and religious lineages, yet the image of the life-giving Mother of Waters continues to speak across all of them. Perhaps that is because every human life begins in water. Perhaps it is because every person understands, somewhere deep within the body, the desire to be held safely while we are becoming. Or perhaps it is because the ocean teaches the lesson we spend our whole lives trying to remember: We can be soft without becoming powerless. We can feel deeply without drowning. We can honor the past without remaining trapped inside it. We can release one tide and still trust that another will return. May Yemaya’s sacred waters remind you that healing can move. May they protect what you love. May they nourish what you are creating. And may they carry you gently toward the shore of your next beginning.
- 10 Powerful Things to Manifest During the Cancer New Moon
By Audra English The Cancer New Moon is one of my favorite New Moons to work with because Cancer energy is deeply personal to me. I am a Cancer Sun, so I understand this sign from the inside. Some of the people I have loved most throughout my life have also carried strong Cancer energy. My grandmother was a Cancer Sun like me, and my son has a Cancer Moon. Cancer energy has shown up throughout my family through emotion, protection, intuition, memory, loyalty, home, motherhood, and the instinct to care deeply for the people we love. Cancer is often described as soft, sensitive, and nurturing. That is true, but it is only part of the story. Cancer is also protective. It is loyal. It remembers everything. It builds homes, families, traditions, businesses, and legacies around what matters most. Cancer understands that emotional security is not a small thing. Feeling safe, supported, loved, and rooted changes how we move through every other part of life. That is why the Cancer New Moon can be such a powerful time for manifestation. Every New Moon begins a fresh lunar cycle. It gives us an opportunity to set intentions, plant new ideas, and decide what we want to begin nurturing. When the New Moon moves through Cancer, our intentions naturally turn toward: Home Family Emotional healing Security Protection Self-love Abundance Intuition Fertility Creativity Peace The future we want to build Cancer is ruled by the Moon, so this New Moon carries an especially strong lunar quality. It encourages us to look beyond what we think we should want and ask a more honest question: What kind of life would truly feel good to live? Here are ten powerful things to manifest during the Cancer New Moon. 1. A Fresh Start Every New Moon supports new beginnings, but the Cancer New Moon is especially meaningful for beginnings connected to your emotional life, home, family, identity, and sense of security. A fresh start may mean: Moving into a new home Beginning a new relationship Starting a business Changing careers Creating healthier routines Healing after a difficult season Rebuilding your confidence Choosing a new direction Beginning again after disappointment Cancer energy reminds us that new beginnings need care. You do not have to know every step before you begin. Sometimes the first step is simply deciding that your life can become different from what it has been. Cancer New Moon Intention I welcome a peaceful, fulfilling, and well-supported new chapter into my life. 2. Emotional Healing Cancer rules emotions, memories, sensitivity, and the experiences we carry within us. This makes the Cancer New Moon a meaningful time to set intentions for emotional healing. You may want to focus on healing from: Heartbreak Grief Family conflict Betrayal Disappointment Rejection Emotional exhaustion A painful ending A difficult childhood A season of feeling unseen or unsupported Emotional healing does not always mean forgetting what happened. Sometimes it means remembering without allowing the memory to control your future. It may mean feeling less burdened, less reactive, more peaceful, or more able to imagine something better. Cancer energy can help us honor what we have felt while making room for new emotional experiences. Cancer New Moon Intention I welcome emotional healing, peace, clarity, and renewal into my life. 3. A Peaceful Home Cancer is the sign most closely connected to home. Our homes hold our routines, relationships, dreams, celebrations, arguments, memories, responsibilities, and everyday lives. When the energy inside a home feels peaceful, everything becomes easier. The Cancer New Moon is a beautiful time to manifest: A calmer household Better communication More cooperation Restful sleep A cleaner or more organized space A feeling of safety Protection from outside stress A welcoming atmosphere A new home A stronger sense of belonging You may also use this New Moon to bless a home you already love. Not every manifestation has to begin with dissatisfaction. Sometimes we manifest by recognizing something precious and deciding to nurture it more intentionally. Cancer New Moon Intention My home is peaceful, protected, welcoming, and filled with loving energy. 4. Stronger Family Relationships Cancer rules family, ancestry, motherhood, caregiving, and the bonds that shape our emotional foundation. This does not mean every family relationship is easy. Cancer energy is deeply aware of how complicated family can be because Cancer remembers history, patterns, promises, loyalties, and emotional wounds. The Cancer New Moon can be used to manifest: Greater family harmony Protection for children Better communication Healing after conflict More patience Stronger relationships Peace during transitions Healthy traditions Emotional closeness A more supportive family structure Family may include your partner, children, parents, grandparents, siblings, extended relatives, or the people you have chosen as family. As someone with strong Cancer energy in my own family, I know how deeply Cancers love. We often think in terms of generations. We remember who came before us, who is beside us, and who we are building the future for. Cancer New Moon Intention My family is surrounded by love, protection, understanding, and peace. 5. Financial Security Cancer is not always the first sign people associate with money, but financial security fits Cancer energy beautifully. Cancer wants to know: Is the home protected? Are the bills paid? Is the family cared for? Is there enough for the future? Can we rest without worrying about what happens next? Cancerian abundance is not only about luxury. It is about stability, provision, comfort, and the freedom that comes from knowing your needs can be met. During the Cancer New Moon, you may want to manifest: Reliable income Debt relief Savings A better job Business growth More customers Financial support Household prosperity Long-term wealth A financial fresh start This is a wonderful time to focus on abundance that lasts. Cancer New Moon Intention I am creating a stable, prosperous, and secure financial future. 6. Your Dream Life The Cancer New Moon is a powerful time to think about your dream life because Cancer encourages us to imagine more than achievements. Your dream life is not only a list of things you own or goals you complete. It is also the way your life feels when you wake up in the morning. Ask yourself: Where do I live? Who shares my life? How do I spend my days? What kind of work do I do? How does my home feel? What relationships surround me? What do I have time for? What makes me feel proud? What helps me feel peaceful? What does success mean to me? Cancer energy can help you create a vision based on what you truly value. For one person, the dream may be a beautiful home full of children and family traditions. For someone else, it may be a quiet apartment, creative freedom, financial independence, and the ability to travel. Your dream life should reflect your values. Cancer New Moon Intention I am creating a life that feels peaceful, abundant, meaningful, and completely my own. 7. Self-Love and Emotional Nourishment Cancer gives so much energy to caring for others. That is one of its greatest gifts, but it can also become exhausting when that care is never returned inward. The Cancer New Moon is an ideal time to manifest a healthier relationship with yourself. You may want to focus on: Self-worth Confidence Emotional balance Rest Healthier boundaries Self-respect Compassion Receiving support Honoring your needs Trusting your feelings Self-love can be practical. It can look like saying no. It can look like making the appointment. It can look like protecting your time, celebrating your progress, changing the way you speak to yourself, or refusing to abandon yourself for someone else’s comfort. Cancer energy teaches us that care should have roots. It should begin at home, and sometimes the first home we need to protect is ourselves. Cancer New Moon Intention I treat myself with love, respect, patience, and care. 8. Business Growth Cancer may be nurturing, but nurturing is also a business skill. A business grows when it is cared for consistently. It needs attention, protection, structure, creativity, loyal relationships, and a strong foundation. The Cancer New Moon can be used to manifest: New customers Loyal clients Greater visibility Increased income A successful launch A stronger brand Better business systems A supportive audience Sustainable growth A business that supports your family and future Cancer energy is especially helpful for businesses connected to care, spirituality, home, family, food, beauty, healing, coaching, art, creativity, or emotional support. It is also excellent for any business owner who wants to create a deeper relationship with their customers. Cancer New Moon Intention My business grows steadily, attracts loyal customers, and supports the future I am building. 9. Fertility and Creative Birth Cancer is associated with motherhood, fertility, creation, nurturing, and new life. For some people, this may involve manifesting: Conception Pregnancy A healthy family journey Adoption Support during fertility treatments Protection over a pregnancy Preparing for a child Growing a family For others, fertility may be creative. You may be preparing to give life to: A book A business A course A piece of art A new product A website A personal reinvention A long-held dream Creation requires care before the world can see the result. The Cancer New Moon supports the hidden beginning, the private work, the planning, and the stage when something is still becoming. Cancer New Moon Intention I lovingly nurture what I am ready to create, grow, and bring into the world. 10. Inner Peace Cancer is highly sensitive to emotional atmosphere. That sensitivity can be a gift, but it can also become overwhelming when too much is happening at once. The Cancer New Moon is a beautiful time to set intentions for inner peace. You may want to manifest: A calmer mind Emotional balance Better sleep Less worry Greater clarity More patience Relief from overwhelm Stronger boundaries Better emotional regulation A deeper sense of safety Inner peace does not require a perfect life. It means having a stronger center within yourself, even while life continues moving around you. Cancer New Moon Intention I welcome calm, clarity, emotional balance, and peace into my daily life. How to Choose Your Cancer New Moon Intention You do not need to manifest all ten things at once. Choose the intention that feels most important right now. Ask yourself: What area of my life needs the most care? What would help me feel safer or more secure? What am I ready to begin? What am I ready to stop carrying? What would make daily life feel better? What do I want to grow over the next several months? You may notice that several intentions connect with one another. For example: Financial security may support a peaceful home. Self-love may strengthen relationships. Emotional healing may help you create a new chapter. Business growth may help you build your dream life. Choose one primary intention and allow related desires to gather around it. A Simple Cancer New Moon Manifestation Ritual You do not need a complicated ritual to work with the Cancer New Moon. You may wish to gather: A white, silver, blue, or pale green candle A bowl or glass of water A piece of paper A pen A shell, crystal, flower, or meaningful object Find a quiet place where you can sit for a few minutes without being interrupted. Light your candle and place the water beside it. Take several slow breaths and think about the intention you want to plant. Write: During this Cancer New Moon, I welcome… Complete the sentence in your own words. Keep your intention clear and focused. Read it aloud. Place your paper beneath the bowl of water or beside your candle. Spend a few minutes imagining what your life may look like as this intention begins unfolding. When you are finished, thank the Moon, extinguish your candle safely, and keep your written intention somewhere meaningful. You may revisit it throughout the next lunar cycle. Cancer New Moon Journal Prompts Use these Cancer New Moon journal prompts to explore your intentions: What would help me feel more secure? What does a peaceful home look like to me? What emotional burden am I ready to release? What part of my life needs more care? What family pattern would I like to change? What do I want to create over the next several months? What would financial stability allow me to experience? What kind of future am I building? Where do I need stronger boundaries? What would make my daily life feel more fulfilling? What am I ready to receive? What would it mean to feel truly at home in my life? Final Thoughts As a Cancer Sun, I know this energy can be emotional, protective, creative, intuitive, nostalgic, ambitious, and fiercely devoted all at once. Cancer wants to protect what it loves. It wants to build something meaningful. It wants the people it cares about to feel safe. It wants a home, a future, and a life that carries emotional value. The Cancer New Moon gives us an opportunity to plant intentions around those desires. Choose what matters most. Give it your attention. Care for it. Allow it to grow. Some of the most powerful manifestations begin quietly, beneath a dark Moon, when we finally become honest about the life we are ready to create.
